Marshmallows in the sky

Marshmallows in the Air?

Whenever you look up in the sky, what do you see? Are those huge marshmallows in the sky? Or huge fluffs of cotton? Hmmm better still are they giant soapsuds? Amazing isn’t it..

Coming out of our imagination land – we have a simple name for these fluffs of cotton. They are called clouds. What are they made up of? You know that they are not cotton, marshmallows or soapsuds. Then, what is it? They are made up of water !

A cloud is a large collection of very tiny droplets of water or ice crystals. The droplets are so small and light that they can float in the air.

Hmm.. Now that we know that the clouds are made up of water it makes sense that they bring rain. But how so? The water forms droplets around dust particles in the air. These droplets with dust  in them get bigger and bigger until they can no longer float and they fall down.  And that’s rain.

Clouds are white because they scatter the light of the sun.

Why do clouds turn gray in colour?

When the clouds get thick enough or high enough that sunlight is not able to make it through – they start looking gray or dark in colour.

Next time you see a dark cloud run to your home as it may start raining : )
