What is so special on our planet Earth that it has life on it? What does it have that no other planet has? What is it that Mars might have had in past? Water!! Did you know that the first life on Earth originated in water.

Our earth is made up of around 70 % of water.  Just the same way geologists have divided land into continents for easy reference, they have divided one massive water body on Earth into smaller ones that we call Oceans.. The word ocean comes from a Greek word okaeons meaning an “enormous divine water body encircling the earth.”

We have five oceans in all. They are Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic. The Earth’s oceans are all connected to one another. Until a few years ago, there were only 4 oceans that were officially recognized. In the spring of 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization established the Southern Ocean, and determined its limits. In fact, Why don’t thou ask some grown ups? Let us see what they have to say. They might not be updated yet ;)

The biggest ocean among all five is the Pacific Ocean which is around countries.  It extends from the Arctic in the north till the Antarctica in the south It is bounded by Asia and Australia in the west, and the Americas in the east. Mariana Trench is the deepest point in Pacific ocean.

Atlantic Ocean is the second biggest ocean on Earth. It is the ‘almost S shaped‘ water body sandwiched between the Americas on one side and Europe and Africa on the other.

Indian Ocean, the third biggest ocean in size, is bounded by Asia—including India, after which the ocean is named.

The newest entrant, Southern Ocean is the ocean around Antarctica. Some people also call it Antarctic ocean.
