On March 12, there was a powerful solar storm that originated from a sunspot known as Active Region 1690. In a solar storm,  a huge cloud of super heated particles is released from the Sun into the space. This storm though not directed towards the Earth, will surely pass it.

When these high energy particles from the sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere, they dash with the molecules present there, and generate a colourful glow. The result is the most brilliant light show on earth known as Auroras – also known as northern and southern lights.

So all the people living on high latitudes – near the poles, get ready for a wonderful display of colourful lights in the sky soon!!

Rarely, a very powerful solar blast can also disrupt radio communications, GPS signals and power grids.
