Apparently for countries like Germany, Denmark and Iceland there is a lot in the name. Iceland has some rules about keeping names. Names that do not fit Iceland’s culture, grammar or pronunciation are not allowed.

Blaer Bjarkardottir’s mother named her Blaer unaware that it was not on the official list of accepted names. Blaer loves her name which means  “light breeze” but according to officials it is not a feminine name. She has always been referred to as “Girl” in communications with officials.

The District Court, on Thursday, allowed Blaer to keep her name. The 15 year old is happy that she will finally get a passport!!
