Yes, it is hard to believe but it is true! We are considering the fact that their combined weight is greater than the combined weight of all humans. Actually the ants by far outnumber humans so if you put all the ants of this Earth and all the humans on a scale, the ants will be heavier.
Ants have been crawling on our planet for about 100 million years (Wow! they must really know what the dinosaurs looked like) and can be found almost anywhere on the planet. There are more than 10,000 known species of ants out of which a very small percentage is what we see near us.
Ants can carry 20 times their own body weight. An ant brain has about 2,50,000 brain cells. A human brain has 10,000 million so a colony of 40,000 ants together has the same size brain as a human. Ah! No wonder they like to stick together. The ants are extremely social beings and live in colonies. They generally have at least one or more queen and the rest are worker ants. Their job is to get food and take care of the queen.
It is very interesting that the worker ants that collect the food are not able to digest it so they give the food to larvae (young ants), these larvae then digest the food and give it back to worker ants. Whoa! how helpful these tiny creatures are.
They have a nice support system with everyone doing a clear task that is given to them. When a worker ant finds good food source he leaves a scent trail so that the others are able to find the source. Hmm…No wonder the whole army is there is get your dessert.
Their unity has really made them survive for this long. We can learn a lesson or two from them.
