Hmm! What is this flower that we are talking about? Daisy:). A Daisy is made up of two types of flowers – disk florets and petal-like white ray florets. The disk is made up of many tiny flowers squeezed together. The name “daisy” is thought to have come from the old English “daes eage”, meaning “day’s eye”, because in earlier times people thought that the yellow center looks like a tiny sun and the petals as the rays .
Daisies come in many sizes, some can be as tall as six feet and some just as tall as grass on the lawn. Daisies are found everywhere on Earth except Antarctica. These flowers are simple and elegant and turn any garden beautiful. However one has to be careful as they can survive in very difficult situations, resistant to bugs and pests and that is why they can become weeds also.
Other than looking beautiful, this flower is edible as well so next time you are eating a salad ask mom to put a daisy petal or two. Tell her that the petals have vitamin C and she will be super impressed.
In olden times some people considered daisy to be lucky and some thought it was unlucky. Well times have changed and no one thinks like that anymore. But people still use it to tell fortune. How so? Here is how it is, if you pick a petal out and say, ” I’ll get a bike this Christmas and picking another petal say ” I won’t get a bike…”, keep on doing that hoping that when you pick the last petal you will be saying that you will get a bike for Christmas.
Did you know that:
People use the phrase “As fresh as a Daisy” because daisies are supposed to be pure and innocent.
They also use “Opsies Daisies” when something goes wrong.
