The itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again….
Scary as they may be some spiders are not itsy bitsy all the time. There is a species of spider that would make you freeze in fear.
If you guessed Goliath Bird-eater, you would be right!
These huge, hairy spiders are the largest spiders by mass, and they belong to the tarantula family. Guess how powerful they are??
Goliath Bird-eaters can grow up to a foot long with one inch long fangs!! The tiny spiders in your house are not even an inch long!!
Their long, pointy fangs contain poison. These spiders hunt mostly in the night. Even with eight eyes, these tarantulas have poor vision, so they hunt by sensing the vibrations of the moving prey.
Are you scared? Breathe a sigh of relief. Their bite is harmless to humans, and you are too big for them to swallow you. Although they have these tiny tarantula hair that might irritate you, there is nothing much they can do to hurt you.
When threatened, they rub their abdomen with their hind legs to release very fine bristle like hair that can irritate your skin and mucous membranes. That will make you itchy and wanting to cough. Take a look at this video.
The funny thing is that Goliath bird eater does not normally eat birds. So why does it get that name? It is because the explorers who named it, witnessed this tarantula eating a hummingbird.
