Did you know that that rain absorbs and scatters mobile phone signals? Therefore, as more rain falls, signals become lower. So, the dip in mobile phone signals can give an idea about how much rain must have fallen.
This modern technique to measure rainfall using mobile signals will be now implemented in United Kingdom. As of now, the amount of rainfall in the country is measured by either radar or rain gauges. Many places have none of these.
Once this technique is implemented, it will also become easier to raise flood warnings, or manage local water resources across the country.
