Heavy rains in northern China caused huge flooding, and tons of water swept down from the mountains and swept away a part of the wall at Dajingmen. The cascade of rain left a 36 meter wide gap in the ancient Great Wall of China.
The Great Wall of China, listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1987, was initially built in seventh century BC to keep invaders out of the Chinese Empire.
Heavy rains have flooded parts of China since July, when the rainy season began in the country.
