Lake Ellsworth  is about 14km long, 3km wide and 160m deep and lies under 2 miles of thick. It has been like that for almost half million years. British scientist Martin Siegert discovered the subglacial lake in 1996.

The scientist’s are not going to get this done easily as the lake is located in a part of Antarctica that is famous for its low temperatures and blasting winds.

Prof Siegert of Bristol University and the rest of the team will drill down into the lake to collect samples from the lake.

They need to be extremely careful because they do not want to contaminate the lake in the drilling process. They will look for microbes  in the water and clues to past climate in the lake-bed sediments.
