Lake Ellsworth, an ancient subglacial lake in Antarctica was discovered in 1996. It lies under 2 miles of thick ice. It has been like that for almost half million years.
The scientists want to drill a hole into the lake to collect samples of lake water and sediment which can give clue about climate conditions in past. The plan was to use almost boiling water(90C) water to blast a hole into the thick ice sheet to reach the lake waters below. However, the team has reported a problem with the boiler used to heat the water . The drilling has been postponed and will start once the boiler gets fixed.Ancient Lake of Antarctica drilling Postponed
