Wake up early in the morning and run to the garden. It will be full of tweets. The beautiful twitter of the birds. But have you heard about the other Twitter? You must have heard people mentioning about Twitter. These days people are waking up and checking their computers and phones to read the new tweets.
You can guess that it is definitely not the warble of the birds? What is it then?
Twitter is an online social networking service, something like Facebook. It allows people to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 letters, known as “tweets“. Text based messages are SMSs right? You would now think that what is the difference between an SMS and a tweet. There is some similarity as they are both short messages, but they are also quite different. An SMS is usually sent by one person to his/her friend. Twitter messages, on the other hand, can be sent to thousands of people.
Twitter introduced a fascinating concept called “Following” — where each user can “follow” some other users’ messages. People don’t have to be friends or mutually follow each other. Anyone can follow your tweets, but you don’t have to follow their tweets if you do not want to.
Now, be careful of what you tweet because Santa might be following you on twitter!
Did you Know:
Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched on the Internet the same year in July.
In six years, it has now reached 500 million users.
