Long time ago there were people who lived in a place called Israel. These people were called Israelites. There were also people named the Philistines who lived in Philistine. The Israelites and the Philistines did not get along well, and both wanted to conquer each other. As a result, they both were in a battle.
There was a little shepherd boy named David who lived in Israel. He was the youngest in his family. All his elder brothers used to go to fight the battle against Philistines because they were old enough. David was supposed to take care of the sheep and make sure they were well fed and well protected. He was a very brave boy. He used to fight with animals like bears and lions to protect his sheep.
Now Philistines had many giants living in their land. One of the strongest and biggest giants was named Goliath. Goliath was over nine feet tall. Clever Philistines send him to fight the battle. Every day, Goliath would come to the battlefield and challenge the Israelites in his big scary voice, ” I dare you petty people to find one man who can fight me.” Even the King of Israel, King Saul was afraid to face him. They were on the verge of losing the battle.
One day David went to the battlefield to hand over his brothers some food. As he approached the battle grounds, he heard Goliath shouting his challenge as he did every day. David came to know that Goliath had been challenging the Israelites for past forty days, but nobody had come forward and showed the courage to fight him.
David was both sad and surprised. He told his brothers,” It is such a pity that no one in my country has the courage to stand up to this man. I will do it. I will fight this giant.” David’s brothers yelled at him and explained him of the danger, but David just would not change his mind.
He went to King Saul to seek his permission. The King gave the brave little boy his best armor to protect him from the Giant, but David took it all off. Instead, on his way back to the battle field, David went to a stream nearby and picked up five smooth stones. He put them in a pouch around his waist, and with his sling he went to fight Goliath.
When Goliath saw a little boy dressed up in shepherd clothes, he couldn’t help laughing. He thought it was no less than a joke that Israelites would send such a small boy to fight him. As Goliath approached David to attack him, without wasting anytime David pulled out a stone from his pouch, put it into his slingshot and shot it at Goliath. The stone hit the giant right between his eyes. He lost his balance and fell with a loud thud on the ground, moaning in pain. Minutes passed, and Goliath didn’t get up. His lifeless body laid still on the ground.
The Israelites roared with cheer. Little boy David had done it! He had killed the giant. On seeing Goliath’s plight, all the other Philistines also ran away. The Israelites picked up David on their shoulders and danced with joy.
