Bapu’s Birthday

Gandhi Jayanti is a National Holiday celebrated in India to celebrate of the birthday of  Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu.

Mahatma Gandhi was born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2nd 1869 in Porbandar,Gujarat.

He later launched the ‘Quit India movement’ against the British, a non violent movement to win freedom. Finally India received independence on 15th August 1947  from the British.

He is dearly known by all Indians as “Bapu“ and also  ”Father of the nation.

Since he was born today many years ago, this day every year is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti.

Prayer meetings are held at Raj Ghat, New Delhi, the memorial where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. The President and Prime Minister of India attend the  prayer services. A lot of people visit to pay respect to Bapu.

Because of Bapu’s teachings of non-violence the United Nations declared, in year 2007, that this day be marked and remembered as the International Day of Non-Violence.
